As
you well know, IEEE members can take advantage of a
myriad of discount opportunities, either in the form of
core IEEE products OR from IEEE sponsored programs which
are offered at reduced rates as a benefit of membership.
However, member surveys indicate that awareness of IEEE
discount programs is low, such that 50% of members do
not know about them or where to find them.
To
address this issue, a decision was made to present
information about all these programs in a new
centralized location, which is now the "IEEE Member
Discounts" Web page. This notice also serves to announce
that the brand "Financial Advantage Program" has been
retired.
Please take a look at the new
IEEE Member Discounts page.
The "IEEE product discounts" section is listed first and
we are still working on compiling all the entries to
appear here. The "IEEE sponsored discounts" section
lists programs in the following categories: Insurance,
Travel, Technology and Home/Office Discounts. Programs
that are available globally are clearly marked in this
listing. We have also added an FAQ page that seeks to
clarify the geographic availability of the sponsored
programs and how they are developed and vetted.

Houston Section's Chair Message
by Charlie Pulay, 2010 Section Chair |
Greetings
- The Houston IEEE Executive committee wants to
thank you for your support and participation in
2009, and we welcome you to join us in 2010. I
personally want to thank the Executive Committee
especially Sam Terry, previous Chair, and Donald
Dunn for their dedication. I am appreciative of
the opportunity to lead the Houston IEEE Section
and will work to grow the organization.
Another year has come and gone and now we look forward
to the start of a new decade. The last decade
brought many technological advancements and the
disciplines of electrical and instrument
engineering gained in increasing importance
across many aspects of our society. Clean and
renewable energy and micro and power electronics
promise great new opportunities and will be
something to watch.
As impressive are the challenges of the worst economy
since the 1930's, and it is now hitting our
great state and our colleagues. Now, more than
ever, the IEEE / IAS network of professionals
can provide opportunities that can truly impact
our colleagues quality of life. We will work to
provide training and access to employment search
for our colleagues to regain employment.
Finally, I welcome your input for ways to make your
IEEE section a strong, vibrant community. We
plan to have many exciting speakers with some of
today's most current topics. We welcome your
input for presentation topics and/or activities.
Please see the IEEE calendar for meeting dates and we
look forward to seeing you soon. |

SPECIAL EVENT
FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS
IEEE GOLD/SAC (Graduates of the Last
Decade/Student Activities Committee) leaders will be flying in
from all over the world to Houston on March 23 (Friday) to host
a very special one-of-a-kind event here in Houston.
We have invited top execs from a few large local companies to
talk about the oil and gas industry. This will be followed by a
discussion forum on how electrical engineers can make a career
in the oil & gas industry. The forum panel will be made up of
the industry execs as well as our international team of MGA/GOLD
leaders; and audience participation is encouraged.
So, if you are
graduating college (whether you are finishing your bachelor's
degree, Masters or PhD) within the next year, and are keen to
explore the booming industry of oil and gas in the Houston area;
this is your chance to mingle
with top industry execs,
network with your peers (students
members from all 6 local colleges have been invited)
as well as other IEEE professionals from around the world
(whether it's someone from Paris, France; or Perth, Australia),
make sure to sign up for this event. We'll even throw in dinner!
